Aleister Crowley as Cosmic ESPionage Agent

Aleister Crowley (1875-1947) was born in Victorian England to a life of financial privilege and religious bigotry. He rebelled against his traditional upbringing, becoming a Masonic maverick. The iconoclast philosopher became a mountaineer, a bohemian, a writer of sensuous poetry and a practitioner of what detractors called "the black arts". He was an uninhibited explorer of global spiritual traditions combining ritual magic with spiritual ecstasy. His winding path intersected ceremonial magic, Buddhism, Hinduism, Kabbalah, and made a new age fusion religion of sex, drugs, poetry and music. Was he also a spy?

The Magus: Intell or Intelligentsia?

The Magus is both a symbol of enlightenment and deception -- just like the Tarot card, The Magician, is a card of duality: Wisdom and Folly. "Now you see it; now you don't" is the forte of the illusionist, the juggler of realities, who is master of Orwellian double-think – holding the tension of the opposites.

Traditionally, the Magus is one who can demonstrate hands-on magic: healing, transformative rituals, alchemical transmutations, charging of talismans, spirit comm, etc. A modern Magus is any person who completes the circuit between heaven and Earth, one who seeks to bring forth the divine 'gold' within her or himself. But that is how the outer world sees it. The inner life of a mercurial Magus is a complex psychic layer-cake of inner planes of transcendent experience where quantum leaps of consciousness are possible.

But the gifts of the Spirit come at a price. The magician taps into, becomes one with, a pure substance akin to thought (mind). It's subatomic vibration of Light and Sound is the enlivening force, which feeds creation. All magick is wrought through this impressionable ether plenum, using true properties of nature, it's laws, forces, and principles. The mage seeks to selectively establish an internal order out of this chaos, then externalize it, according to his vision.

This power card also represents the fine line dividing white magic from black magic, toxic or malignant black ops. Power can be used in either a self-serving manner, or one in service to the All. In order for The Magus to achieve his aims, there must be constant awareness and self-examination.

This is the Trump of discernment. The Magus can discriminate between various realities and fantasies, between various points of view, without buying into any belief system, literally. The magician orchestrates and works within others’ belief systems, creates the perception, manipulates and defines the perceived reality, creates the structure for self-orgnizing transformation.

Cosmic Intelligencer, Aleister Crowley was among the first magicians of the modern era to find his own personal zero point in the Abyss of the transcendent imagination. He pioneered the use of psychedelics, much like Freud pioneered the study of cocaine. His symbol was the phallic Wand, his means the creative Word, both truth and falsehood.

Whether he ended his life as a degenerate burn out or enlightened individual is a deep paradox. But who better than a cunning master of deception to enter the hall of mirrors of international ESPionage as Agent 666? He may have seen others of the intelligentsia, the manipulative High Priesthood in there, smiling back from the Abyss – Aldous and Julian Huxley, Bulwer-Lytton, H.G. Wells, George Orwell, Helena Blavatsky and later even L. Ron Hubbard.

Yet, it was Crowley who eventually pulled the cosmic trigger on a cultural revolution with an unlikely accomplice – the CIA. The infamous MK Ultra program of the CIA dosed unsuspecting CIA officials with LSD, and their reaction were studied like "guinea pigs". Later, it was turned on the unsuspecting general population. Curiously, the LSD "counter-culture" of the 1960s, the "student revolution", was financed by $25 million from the CIA. In their own Black Ops program, Astral travel became Remote Viewing and psychism became Psychotronics, influencing the mindbody of another at a distance.

Psychedelic cults took root in the U.S. and spread from San Francisco to Europe. Crowley’s promotion of drugs. used for induced psychotic states, was followed by Tavistock Institute sponsorship. Jung provided the science; Crowley laid down the hedonistic drug, sex, and magick philosophy

Crowley got his New Age, even if the results seem a little childish or narcissistic to those of a more mature disposition. Broader than reform, deeper than revolution, this benign conspiracy for a new human agenda has triggered cultural evolution even if polarity and stress undergird it.

Aquarian Conspirators, 1980’s pioneers of social transformation, embodied the cultural imprint of Tavistock vision. They used their mindbodies in the battle toward a higher consciousness, urging a paradigm shift to a more mindful society. The way to heal the imbalances is to heal ourselves. The way to heal ourselves is to pay attention, to witness.

“New Age” is an umbrella term to describe organizations which seem to exhibit one or more of the following beliefs: (1) All is one, all reality is part of the whole; (2) Everything is God and God is everything; (3) Man is God or a part of God; (4) Man never dies, but continues to live through reincarnation; (5) Man can create his own reality and/or values through transformed consciousness or altered states of consciousness.

Whip Me; Beat Me; Call Me Thelema

Certainly, there was mystical insight and prophetic wisdom in Crowley’s enigmatic writings. But it remains unknown to what extent he was able to ‘seize the noble fruit’ himself, beyond his ostentatious claims. Nevertheless, he’s been accused of everything from being the “wickedest man on earth” to being the potential father of Barbara Bush! Outlandish stories about Crowley still arise phoenix-like, much like Jimi Hendrix releasing posthumous albums.

"The Great Beast 666" -- the infamous practitioner of "sex magick" whose motto was "Do What Thou Wilt" -- came to know Pauline Robinson Pierce, Barbara’s mother, through a mutual libertine friend, Frank Harris. Most likely it is viral nonsense that Barbara is Crowley’s love child. Yet, the story is typical of how others relentlessly project onto the legendary mind bending Magus, even retroactively. But somehow the math adds up to Barbara’s birth nine months after her abrupt departure!

She was a beautiful young socialite married to a publisher. In 1924 she went to France, where she fell in with the mistress of Frank "My Life and Loves" Harris, Crowley's patron. The idea is that the impressionable Mrs. Pierce then came under the spell of Crowley, once described by a newspaper as "the wickedest man in the world”. It is even suggested that Barbara was conceived during a "sex magick" ritual. Do we hear the words "DNA test"?

A world traveler and adventurer, Crowley was always keen for any game that was afoot. Could his sidelines have included cultural engineering and global espionage? Did he insinuate himself into the Great Game of international spying? He certainly tried, as did his friend James Bond creator, Ian Flemming who recommended him to debrief Hesse. Some say it’s plausible he was an Intel asset, others find it certain based on discoveries of hard evidence. (Spence)

Besides a few centuries of secret societies and revolutionary thought, what inspired Crowley’s quest? Did it overlap or was it co-opted by other organizations for their own purposes? Did this Strange Attractor willingly cooperate or, as usual, keep his thought processes unknown as his behavior was enigmatic?

The Crowley meme is still bending minds toward their True Will (Thelema), so perhaps he engineered one of the most successful mind control ops in history. In some ways he was the spiritual godfather of the counterculture, having influenced many popular figures.

Perhaps by alchemically combining sources from both the left and right political wings we can approach the truth – or at least The Middle Way -- even if it remains indelibly mythologized. The left-handed path of libertarianism and radical hedonism is counterpoint to the Right pillar preference for authoritarian, aristocratic rule and classical culture – autarchy vs. totalitarianism.


Reinventing the World

In the wake of the Enlightenment, the notion arose of an intellectual elite, a distinguished social stratum that can be traced far back into classical history. The elite classes of intellectuals or well-educated people emerged in most European countries

The intelligentsia is a social class of people engaged in complex mental and creative labor directed to the development and dissemination of culture, encompassing intellectuals and social groups close to them (e.g., artists, mystics, psychologists, psychiatrists, scientists and teachers). It is the forerunner of what we can call the ‘psychedelic intelligentsia’ and today’s New Age spiritual fusion.

Utopian socialism is the philosophical root of modern socialist thought. Anyone can be a utopian socialist, but the trend emerged in the first quarter of the 19th century. From the mid-19th century onwards, the other branches of socialism overtook utopianism in popularity. Utopian socialists are forerunners of communal hippie life, intentional communities and cooperatives. It is exemplified in the Star Trek philosophy. Its dystopian reflection is The Matrix, the postmodern Brave New World.

Quasi-socialist intellectuals created hypothetical visions of perfect egalitarian and communal societies without actually concerning themselves with the manner in which these societies could be sustained. Yet, they shared a dream.

The Occult Revival

Theosophical studies cover the origin and development of the cosmos and human development in all the planes of being from its beginning to its end. It is a philosophy of process, transformation, and evolution toward an extraordinary human potential. Out of this Utopian and scientific socialism came Theosophy, British” guild" socialism, the Fabian Society, Bertrand Russell, H. G. Wells, Tavistock and iconoclast Aleister Crowley.

Aleister Crowley is an infamous occultist. Occultism has served as "an alternative account of the world, available to people dissatisfied with the orthodox view of things, scientifically and politically, since the late 18th century. Older than Theosophy with roots in kabbalah, Hermetics, and pantheism, Magick was a practical application of causing change to conform with will using similar principles. They both embrace the Hermetic Axiom: “As Above; So Below,” which reflects the identity of man as a microcosm.

The Cryptocracy, through economics and mass mind control is involved in the transformation or "alchemical processing" of mass consciousness by psychological mind manipulation. With the help of these foundations and secret societies, experiments in world shaping continue multimedia and military campaigns. The goal is to seed and control megatrends so the masses live as controlled puppets – wage slaves -- of the ruling elite.

Tavistock: Mass Brainwashing Institute

Tavistock, a progressive society, was founded in London in 19 . It always had secret ties to British Freemasonry. Its aims include social control, information control; and control of the hidden information environment. Practically, his means it has control mechanisms in academia, multimedia, intelligence, and medicine but especially pharmaceuticals.

Three elements combine to make the Institute unusual, if not unique: it has the independence of being entirely self-financing, with no subsidies from the government or other sources; the action research orientation places it between, but not in, the worlds of academia and consultancy; and its range of disciplines include anthropology, economics, organizational behavior, political science, psychoanalysis, psychology and sociology.

We assume large corporations have economic objectives. But we don't expect them to have a secret social and occult agenda as well. For example, we don't expect them to engineer arrested development and family breakdown. We don't expect them to use pop culture to foster alienation and dysfunction. But evidence suggests Tavistock and its sister organizations do exactly that.

Central bankers based in the City of London control the cartels that dominate the world. They finagled the right to print money based on our credit and quite naturally used this advantage to buy everything worth having. This might be tolerable if limitless wealth was all they wanted. But they also want limitless power: not just one-world dictatorship but total control over our minds and souls. Popular culture is engineered to brainwash each of us from cradle to grave. Trends and megatrends are manufactured, engineered by corporations.

Society evolves slowly toward "social efficiency" all by itself; society under stress, however, evolves much faster! Thus the deliberate creation of crisis is an important tool of evolutionary socialists. Does that help you understand the global drama a little better, or well-publicized doomsday scenarios?

Tavistock provided most of the detailed programs for establishing the Office of Naval Intelligence, (ONI). This wing of intelligence dwarfs the CIA in size and scope. The U.S. Government gave billion dollar contracts to Tavistock. Tavistock’s strategic planners provide most of the long-range plans used in the defense establishment.

Manipulating the masses is easy if you know how. There were gray eminencies hiding within the tie-dye patterns and sexy macramé halter tops who made sure that the sixties generation would burn out according to plan.
Those involved in the CIA's MK- ULTRA program (both handlers and handlerees), the FBI's COINTELPRO operation and, of course, the Tavistock Institute for Human Relations, where the Founding Fathers of mind control still reside. Among their alumni are Sigmund Freud, Carl Jung, Kurt Lewin, R.D. Laing, and other headshrinkers.

The OTO does not merely hint of occultism, but plunges headlong into the very subjects the high degree Masons are told are reserved to the core of initiation. And at the core of these secrets is the embrace of contradiction, of the “elixir of life, “ and of the power of blood. It is the grad-school of masonic groups…a crash course which might make you mad before it enlightens you.

While it is still not clear whether Aleister Crowley was primarily spying for Britain, Germany, or a rogue regime, we do know from his writings that he was looking for a distinct type of doppelganger or "Magic Child."

Crowley studied to be a diplomat at Cambridge, before devoting himself entirely to the occult, and was competent in his knowledge of English, French and German.

Aleister Crowley came to Esopus Island in the Hudson Valley, a small rocky streak of land in the Hudson, still uninhabited and officially off-limits. Coast Guard markers are sunk into the rock at the southern end. Visitors have left carvings in stone and painted graffiti, but one searches in vain for traces of Crowley or his campsite.
There are no wartime reports of Aleister Crowley ever being in Esopus Island, not even in the official Hudson Valley records. He simply vanished from America during the summer of 1918 and did not turn up in England again until the next season.

Did Crowley initiate a current of revolutionary psychedelic use at Esopus Island, New York? He may have been among the first intelligentsia to systematically experiment with their ritual use in North America. Aleister Crowley was 42 the summer he haunted the Hudson Valley shores, swaying and chanting his 'purifications' of ancient pagan ritual in the moth-swirling smoke around his Esopus Island campfire. His bullet-like head was shaved except for a phallic forelock and an irregular and untended growth of new beard. He often wore a robe-like shirt, climbing shoes, shorts and scarlet tassels on his golf socks.'Magically' he was still approaching the height of his powers. In terms of fashion-sense, he was digging his own moats.

Since coming to America in 1914, Crowley had taken such occasional retirements from his New York City base to Lake Pasquaney in New Hampshire and to the tip of Long Island. He was consistently broke at the time, writing an astrology book with Evangeline Adams that never saw print and selling articles to Vanity Fair magazine. If this latter connection seems unlikely, it was also so to the Beast, who wrote of its editor, Frank Crowninshield; "He treated me, through some inexplicable misunderstanding, as a human being and asked me to write for him." A good deal of controversy was to arise from the fact that he was also at the time contributing to the pro-German paper The Fatherland, a service which his detractors considered treasonable and which he was forced to defend with no little exacerbation ever afterward.

It is difficult today to understand how AC's ludicrous and obvious satires were taken to be seriously pro-German but Crowley-haters could seemingly read traitor into his words with the ease of natural reflex. For instance, a British patriot named Bottomry, in condemning this unspeakable bane to decent society, quoted a passage from the Beast's criticism of Count von Reventlow's Vampire which presented reasons for England to become a German colony. An amused Crowley referred to the piece in his journal; "The Germans printed it without a smile! I was very proud of that article. It proved that all island races were primarily fishermen, who lived by snatching fish and must therefore become pirates. The argument is quite in the style of a real German professor.

Many years later, British intelligence expert Richard Deacon would cite evidence that Crowley was trying to aid the Allied cause (and was in fact in touch with the American Department of Justice) but at the time of his upstate adventure there was a wartime concern about strangers to contend with (2,576 from Ulster County alone served in WWI) and the question of his political allegiance was a factor not to be ignored.

On the cliffs, his trademark libertarian sayings rang out: EVERY MAN AND WOMAN IS A STAR! which he explained to mean a sacred and sublime nature existed in every human being which was to be respected. DO WHAT THOU WILT SHALL BE THE WHOLE OF THE LAW, a vital principle of his philosophy which Susan Roberts' biography of the Beast defines as a declaration of rights for that inward star; "-the internal stability of every human being was regulated by its own nature, and when compulsory, arbitrary man-made codes were imposed, the result was a warped human soul. Thus, the phrase was the expression of the right of every person to live, not as an outlaw, but by his or her own internal integrity." (Gary Alexander, Crowley in the Valley)
